Okay, I realize that an actual REAL life update is in order, because a lot has happened during the month of August, and we are almost to September! But bear with me, because this is just going to be a mini-update.
One of the things that I decided to take on this year (“Isn’t it too many things?” my mom questioned. “Maybe,” I said, but I’m only committing to the things that I really REALLY want to do, like hosting a Chinese exchange student–more on that later) is becoming a contributor for Knoxville Mom’s Blog. It’s a pretty major publication, and even though it’s local, it’s part of a City Mom Blog franchise that spans different cities across the nation. So people in other places will be reading it as well…pretty much anyone who is interested in mom topics may stumble across it.
Becoming a contributor means a lot more viewers for my writing. My blog gets a good amount of foot traffic, but it’s nothing close to going viral or gaining the massive amount of followers that some of my blogging friends have (I’m looking at you, Rach!). Having a much wider audience is scary, but also really exciting. I felt a little bit sick when my first post went live this morning, but it’s on a pretty safe topic (rock painting!), and it may not even get that many clicks. Writing about something more personal (which I, of course, will need to do at some point) will be much scarier. You’ll be able to find me in the corner drinking some Pepto and avoiding social media. 😉
Writing for a blog like this came with a lot of unexpected challenges. The writing part I did in a cinch. But trying to figure out the graphics–how muting the colors in my title image would make the text pop better, how to use Canva (to avoid copyrighted photos)and how to print my photos with a watermark, what fonts to use and what fonts to avoid–took me longer than I anticipated. I am by no means a web designer, so after taking a quick crash course and relying on the help of my editor (I have an editor–eeek!) to polish my post for me, it was ready this morning. You can take a look at it here.
I’m super excited about this today! I’m only posting to Knoxville Mom’s Blog about once a month, so I’ll let you guys know when I post next. And stay tuned for a REAL life update coming soon!
